Eight Dogs Advance to Semi-Finals of Wiener Nationals
Qualifying for the 2005 Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals were held this morning on the rugby fields at Qualcomm Stadium. A field of 228 dachshunds participated in the event, each vying for one of eight spots in the semi-final. The semi-final is September 16 at Petco Park during the San Diego Padres versus Washington Nationals baseball game. This Pacific Life Holiday Bowl event was held for the fun of it, and benefited Dachshund Rescue of San Diego.

The fastest qualifier today was Noodles Gainer from Huntington Beach. The 11-inch, 14-pound four-year-old wiener completed the 53-foot course in 3.03 seconds. Other qualifiers include: Truffles Reed of Fallbrook; Kelly Glover of La Mesa; Mister B Rice of Vista; Savannah Sturgill of San Diego; Viper Wells of San Diego; Bobo Kroeker of Huntington Beach; and Woody Scribellito of El Cajon, who completed the eight-dog field with a time of 3.50 seconds.

The fastest two dogs from the Petco Park semi-final will advance to the national championship race in San Diego December 29 during the nationally televised Port of San Diego Big Bay Balloon Parade presented by San Diego County Credit Union, also a Pacific Life Holiday Bowl event. The other finalists represent Albuquerque, El Paso, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Reno and Sacramento.
