Pacific Life Holiday Bowl Opts Out Of Classic Speed Festival
The Pacific Life Holiday Bowl board of directors elected not to continue serving as a partner in the production of the Coronado Classic Speed Festival, 2005 bowl President Stephen P. Cushman announced today.

The decision comes after bowl officials were unable to secure a title sponsor to replace DaimlerChrysler. The automobile manufacturer did not renew their contract after the 2004 event. A change in DaimlerChrysler’s marketing strategy was cited as the reason they did not extend the eight-year agreement.

The vintage automobile races have been held each fall on the runways and taxiways of Naval Air Station North Island in Coronado. Since the race’s inception in 1997, the non-profit bowl game has produced and promoted the event in cooperation with the United States Navy, Naval Air Station North Island, and General Racing Ltd.

“We are extremely disappointed the Pacific Life Holiday Bowl will no longer be involved with this amazing event,” said Cushman. “We sincerely hope the event will continue its great success under the leadership of Steve Earle and the folks at General Racing.”

General Racing Ltd. is continuing to pursue avenues that would keep the event running on the Navy runways and taxiways at Naval Air Station North Island. For information, fans are encouraged to visit www.generalracing.com.

The Classic Speed Festival, which increased its attendance each year, featured more than 200 of the world’s top racing machines from years gone by competing wheel to wheel on a 1.6-mile course. The event drew racing enthusiasts from around the country and benefited the Navy’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation fund, which provides recreation opportunities for Navy personnel and their families.
