Former San Diego Mayor Pete Wilson Named Honorary Chair
December 27, 2008
Former California governor and San Diego mayor Pete Wilson has been named the 2008 Honorary Chairman of the Pacific Life Holiday Bowl. The honor is awarded each year to an individual who has contributed to San Diego sports and society in a meaningful way.
Wilson, who was mayor of San Diego from 1971 to 1982, was instrumental in the creation of the Holiday Bowl more than 30 years ago. He also was the first to call San Diego “America’s Finest City,” a slogan that is still used today. Wilson is also credited with helping revamp San Diego’s downtown area and turning a once-sleepy military outpost into a vibrant and bustling area.
Today, Wilson is Chairman of the National World War II Museum, a Distinguished Visiting Fellow of the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, and a member of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation. Additionally, Wilson served as a member of the President’s Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board and the Defense Policy Board advising the Secretary of Defense. The Pacific Life Holiday Bowl welcomes Wilson back to “America’s Finest City” to serve it in one more role.
This year’s Pacific Life Holiday Bowl game kicks off at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, December 30th. Tickets are available at www.holidaybowl.com.
