La Mesa’s “Kelly” Glover beat seven other dachshunds at
Petco Park to claim San Diego’s spot in the finals of the 2008
Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals – A Pacific Life Holiday Bowl Production.The championship race is December 29th before
the start of the Port of San Diego Big Bay Balloon Parade in downtown San
Diego.Seven other dogs from around the
western United States will join “Kelly” to vie for the national title.
Eight dogs advanced to last night’s showdown after earlier
qualifying saw 362 dogs compete at Qualcomm Stadium’s rugby fields.The seven other finalists included “Jack
Black” from Escondido, “Jack” from Temecula, “Savannah” from San Diego,
“Chaparitto” from Chula Vista, “Heidi Roo” from North County, “Pringle” from
San Diego and “Mila” from San Diego.
“Kelly” covered the 51-foot course in 2.69 seconds, beating
three other dogs by a neck.The race was
staged after the first inning of the San Diego Padres vs. Los Angeles Dodgers
baseball game in front of 27,208 fans.The race was held in the sandbox behind the right-center field
