Pacific Life Holiday Bowl Partners with San Diego Food Bank
December 27, 2008
Image The Pacific Life Holiday Bowl and San Diego Food Bank are asking fans to bolster the Food Bank’s supply at their game day food drive at Qualcomm Stadium during Tuesday’s 5 p.m. game between the Oklahoma State Cowboys and Oregon Ducks. The drive is being made possible by the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians.

Fans are encouraged to bring the San Diego Food Bank’s most needed non-perishable food items including: canned meat & tuna, canned soups, canned fruits and vegetables, peanut butter, canned beans, spaghetti, dry cereal, rice, and mac & cheese.

The San Diego Food Bank is suffering from the double blow of declining donations and a surge in demand from families who’ve been affected by job layoffs, rising mortgages, foreclosures, rising rents, rising food costs and stagnant wages. Current food donations are below 2007 levels yet demand continues to increase with one program alone, the Food Bank’s Emergency Food Program, increasing by 17,000 people since January.

CEO Scody Hage said, “The surge in demand from San Diego County families means that we desperately need fans to donate food at Monday’s game to help us feed families this winter including the tens of thousands affected by the economic crisis.”

2008 Pacific Life Holiday Bowl President Larry Baber said, “The San Diego Food Bank has been a community resource for decades. It provides a safety net for families struggling to put food on the table. And now with their supplies running low, it’s critical that fans help out by brining non-perishable food items to Tuesday’s game.”

Donations will be collected during the game at all stadium entrances. Attendees are asked to look out for the San Diego Food Bank’s red collection barrels.

Fans can also donate using the Food Bank’s red collection barrels at VONS and Wells Fargo locations throughout the county, or food can be delivered to the San Diego Food Bank’s warehouse: 9850 Distribution Avenue.
