Bahia Point, Mission Bay, San Diego (April 25, 2009) – From a record field of 99 teams, Paddle This! successfully defended their title and were crowned champions of the 2009 Pacific Life Holiday Bowl Outrigger Challenge. They narrowly defeated Party Town USA and U.S. Coast Guard in the three-team final to earn their second championship, and become just the third team in the eight-year history of the event to win multiple championships. U.S. Coast Guard leads the way with three wins (2004, 2005, 2007); Intracorp Ohana has two (2002, 2007).
Paddle This! was led by team captain Ryan Goforth. Others on the squad included Michelle Abraminko, Chris Daly, Tammy Lane and David Sten.
For the first time the Manpower Teamwork Trophy was awarded to the team who best displayed sportsmanship, teamwork and the Aloha spirit. Manpower representative Colette Morel presented the inaugural award to Aquaholics.
Special thanks to the Hanohano Outrigger Canoe Club. The club provided the canoes, coordinated the training and managed the races on the bay.
Off the water there was considerable activity as well. Event participants were treated to a luau, complete with food from DaKine's Plate Lunches and beverages from Kona Beer, Pepsi and Aquafina. Entertainment was provided by Kaleo’Onalani Polynesian Dancers.
This important non-profit Pacific Life Holiday Bowl fund-raising activity would not be possible without the support of several corporate partners. In particular, the bowl extends hearty thanks to Wells Fargo for their participation.
Other sponsors included Manpower, San Diego Business Journal, KPRI 102.1 FM, San Diego City Beat, Cox Communications, VAVi Sport and Social Club, Pacific Life, Maui Wowi Hawaiian Smoothies and Coffees, and Hawaiian Airlines.
