Elite Eight Advance to Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals

Qualifying rounds for the 2009 Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals were held on Saturday, August 29th on the rugby fields at Qualcomm Stadium. A field of 363 wiener dogs participated in the 13th annual event, all vying for bragging rights as San Diego’s fastest dachshund.
The sixteen fastest dogs advanced to the semi-final race which was held on Tuesday, September 1st during an inning break of the Padres vs. Nationals game at Petco Park. The top eight dogs from the race advance to the finals on December 30th before the nationally televised Port of San Diego Big Bay Balloon Parade presented by San Diego County Credit Union.
The winner of the semi-final race was “Clifford, the big red wiener dog” a 3 ½ year old, 15- pound dachshund with a course time of 2.62 seconds. The seven other qualifiers advancing to the championship race include: Chile, Beega, Sully, Kona, Chaparrito, Princess Destineny, and Willie.
This Pacific Life Holiday Bowl event benefited the Rancho Coastal Humane Society.
