Pacific Life Holiday Bowl Exceeds Guaranteed Team Payout
March 26, 2009
For the ninth year in a row, the Pacific Life Holiday Bowl will pay over $2 million to the teams that participated in the December 30, 2008 football game at Qualcomm Stadium. The University of Oregon Ducks and Oklahoma State University Cowboys each received $2,444,615 for participating in the 31st annual contest. The guaranteed per team minimum payout was $2.35 million. Payment was delivered February 28th.
The Ducks defeated the Cowboys 42-31 in front of 59,106 fans at Qualcomm Stadium.
While 2008 payout figures from all licensed NCAA bowl games have not yet been gathered, Pacific Life Holiday Bowl officials believe theirs will rank tenth highest of the 34 bowl games.
“We have a history of going above and beyond in all facets of our operations, be it in the quality of our hospitality and special events, or our commitment to the San Diego community and our conference partners,” said Bruce Binkowski, executive director of the Pacific Life Holiday Bowl.
“We are very proud that we again exceeded the per team payout we promised.”
The Holiday Bowl first surpassed the $1 million per team payout threshold in 1989 (Penn St. and BYU).
The $2 million per team payout threshold was first exceeded in 2000 (Oregon and Texas).
Kickoff for the 2009 Pacific Life Holiday Bowl is 5 p.m. on Wednesday, December 30th. The game will be played at Qualcomm Stadium and feature the runner-up from the Pacific-10 Conference against the third selection from the Big 12.
