At a press conference today at the Puebla Amiga Hotel in Tijuana, Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl officials presented awards to the 2010 offensive and defensive high school football players of the year in Tijuana.
This ninth annual bowl awards program was sponsored by the National City Mile of Cars, and supported by XEXX 1420 AM and XHRST 107.7 FM.
The defensive honor was presented to Martin Ulises Loya Padron, a linebacker at Preparatoria Federal Lazaro Cardenas. For the season, he recorded 62 tackles (40 solo), six sacks, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. In addition to his success on defense, Ulises also rushed 12 times for 172 yards and two touchdowns.
The offensive award went to Alberto Lemus Lopez, quarterback for Osos Cetys Tijuana. Lopez led his team both through the air and on the ground. He rushed for 770 yards and nine touchdowns, and passed for 530 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Both players led their squads to the Baja Bowl, the championship game for the OEFA (Organizacion Estudiantil de Futbol Americano de Baja California). Preparatoria Federal Lazaro Cardenas defeated Osos Cetys Tijuana, 21-0 to earn the championship. Ulises was named the game’s MVP.
For their accomplishments, each of their schools received $500 grants for their respective football programs. This generous contribution was made possible by lead program sponsor, the National City Mile of Cars.
The award recipients will be recognized on the field during the Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl on December 30th. The 33rd annual game features the Nebraska Cornhuskers and Washington Huskies. The game kicks off at 7 p.m. at San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium. The game will be broadcast in Spanish on XEXX 1420 AM and XHRST 107.7 FM.
