San Diego State quarterback Todd Santos, who passed for 298 yards in the game, threw three first-half touchdown passes to give the Aztecs a 21-13 halftime lead. A six-yard touchdown run by Chris Hardy on the first play of the fourth quarter gave the Aztecs a 35-21 margin.

Then Iowa quarterback Mark Vlasic brought the Hawkeyes back with two touchdown passes and a two-point conversion, giving Iowa a 36-35 lead.

SDSU placekicker Kevin Rahill booted a 21-yard field goal to give the Aztecs a 38-36 lead with 47 seconds remaining, but Iowa's Kevin Harmon returned Rahill's kickoff 48 yards to the SDSU 37-yard line. Three plays later, Hawkeyes placekicker Rob Houghtlin lined up with four seconds on the clock and kicked a 41-yard field goal to win it.
