SAN DIEGO – After 10 days of qualifying and more than 30,000 shots, 15 golfers lined up to take a total of 28 shots at the LM Capital Group $1 Million Hole-in-One Final Shootout Monday morning at Carlton Oaks Golf Course. While nobody came thru with an ace at the 26th annual event, it was a familiar face who claimed top honors.
Oscar Lopez, who was closest to the pin in 2009, was the top finisher again this year as his best shot landed 26 feet, 9 ½ inches from the 170-yard hole. Lopez came into the final shootout with three attempts earned during the qualifying rounds at Stadium Golf Center, Sept. 8-12 and Sept. 15-19. He went home with a pair of round trip tickets courtesy of Southwest Airlines and a foursome at Carlton Oaks and Chapparal Country Club.
Lopez had a memorable day in 2009 when he won the Shootout after celebrating the birth of his daughter, Mia Maria, in the early morning hours of that same day. She celebrated her fifth birthday September 21st.
Second place went to Robert Welsh, a veteran of the Shootout, with his drive of 27 feet, 5 ½ inches. Third place was Drew Smith who stopped his ball at 27 feet, 11 inches from the pin.
The LM Capital Group $1 Million Hole-in-One Shootout is a fundraiser for the National University Holiday Bowl. Other event sponsors include National University, Wells Fargo, Barney & Barney, Southwest Airlines, Cox Communications, KOGO Radio, San Diego Business Journal and Jersey Mike’s Subs.
The 2014 National University Holiday Bowl is set for 5:00 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 27 and features teams from the Pac-12 and Big Ten conferences. For more information, visit www.SanDiegoBowlGames.com.
