Over 150 teams take part in bocce tournament to benefit San Diego’s Bowl Games
SAN DIEGO – On the edge of the harbor, overlooking the San Diego skyline, a mass of festively dressed bocce teams descended on Liberty Station for the Goldfield Stage Bocce Bash early Saturday morning. In just its first year, the event drew a crowd of over 300 people. The 155 bocce teams took to 32 courts surrounded by spectators bearing coolers and umbrellas. Bocce players 21 and over of all different skill levels competed against each other in a round-robin style tournament. Each team battled for the top spots across three divisions: men’s, women’s and co-ed.
Bocce players showed their creativity by dressing up in costumes and registering under inventive team names. Live music by Tradewinds accompanied the round-robin portion of the tournament and each bocce team received beer provided by New Belgium Brewing Company. It was a lively morning of friendly competition.
Teams that advanced out of the round-robin portion of the tournament moved on to the single elimination round later in the afternoon. In the spirit of the Holiday Bowl, many representatives from local Pac-12 and Big Ten alumni groups came out to battle their college rivals on bocce courts dedicated to an alumni challenge. The day concluded by crowning winners in each of the men’s, women’s and
co-ed divisions. An award was given for best team costume and to the winner of the alumni challenge.
Men’s Division: Baby Got Bocce
Women’s Division: Sorelles
