With the field narrowed to 16, the racing dachshunds were back in action for the San Diego finals of the Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals September 1st at the Del Mar racetrack. San Diego’s own Presley was the fastest on the day, clocking a time of 3.91 seconds for the 30-yard race that was held on the track between horse races.
Presley emerged as the leader after three heats of racing at Del Mar. Those competitors earned a spot in the regional final after placing as one of the top 16 fastest dogs in the initial round of competition that included more than 300 dachshunds August 3rd on the rugby fields at Qualcomm Stadium.
Presley advances to the national championship set for Monday, Dec. 30th prior to the start of the Port of San Diego Big Bay Balloon Parade. Eight dogs from around the country will compete in the event finale that is shown to a national television audience.
The Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals, now in the 18th season, serve as a fund-raiser for the non-profit Holiday Bowl.
