Rotary clubs from San Diego and Imperial Counties have teamed up to underwrite the entry fees for twenty youth teams at this year’s Jack in the Box® “Hoops at the Beach” 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament. The 24th annual event is this weekend, May 21st and 22nd at Crown Point Shores along Mission Bay. It’s the largest tournament of its kind in San Diego County.
“Hoops at the Beach” serves as a fund-raiser for the non-profit Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl, a 501(c)(3) community enhancement organization dedicated to generating tourism and economic benefit for the San Diego region.
This year marks the centennial anniversary of Rotary in San Diego, where the oldest Rotary Club in the District, the San Diego Rotary Club, was chartered in 1911. Rotary is an organization of business, professional and community leaders united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. In more than 160 countries worldwide, approximately 1.2 million Rotarians belong to more than 30,000 Rotary clubs. As part of the Rotary Centennial celebration, the local clubs have focused their attention on the San Diego community, with a special emphasis on local youth.
Tournament participants receive event t-shirts and at least two games in double elimination or round-robin play. There are 12 divisions for boys and men, six divisions for girls and women and one co-ed division. There are age divisions for both genders ranging from 3rd to 12th grade. Men also can compete in the Elite, 6’0 & under, 6’3 & under, Men’s Open, Masters (30 & over), Super Masters (40 & over), and Senior Masters (50 & over) divisions.
