SAN DIEGO – It was an action-packed opening round of racing at the 18th Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals August 9th as 16 dogs earned a spot in the San Diego final set for August 30 at the Del Mar Race Track. Those 16 dogs were fastest among nearly 250 who raced on the grass track outside Qualcomm Stadium.

Several local veterans were among the competition but it was Long Beach standout Tootsie who turned in the fastest time of the day, covering the 53-foot grass track in 2.68 seconds. Reggie Racer moved up one spot this year, improving to second place with a time of 2.69 and Placentia's Presley was third in 2.78. Rango from Castiac earned the final spot in the field, with a time of 3.15, after winning a closely contested runoff with Jungle Book.

Highlighting the race day was the debut of the Dapper Dachshund Costume Contest. There was no shortage of creativity as more than 70 dogs strolled the red carpet, competing for the title of Best Dressed, Funniest, Most Creative and Miss/Mr. Wienerschnitzel.

The winner from the Del Mar regional final will advance to the national championship set for Friday, Dec. 26 prior to the start of the Port of San Diego Big Bay Balloon Parade. Eight dogs from around the country will compete in the event finale that is shown to a national television audience.
