After several grueling qualifying races, Reggie of San Diego nosed out three other racing wieners at Del Mar yesterday to earn a spot to represent San Diego in the national final of the Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals. The winning time was 4.02 seconds.
“We’re so thankful to the folks at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club for allowing us to stage the San Diego final on the track,” said Katharine LiMandri, event coordinator of the races. “It’s the perfect spot to find San Diego’s fastest dog and everyone has such a terrific time, the dog owners and track fans alike!”
The national final is Thursday, December 27th before the start of the nationally televised Port of San Diego Big Bay Balloon Parade presented by San Diego County Credit Union. Eight dogs from around the country will compete in the event finale.
Reggie and fifteen other dachshunds advanced to yesterday’s showdown on the turf at Del Mar by besting the times of more than 330 other dogs at the August 4th qualifer at Qualcomm Stadium. The others included Scooter, Presley, Daphne, Maximus, Elvis, Tootsie, Alvin, Charger, Maddy, Maxwell, Dexter, Elvis, Minnie, Truffle, and Lady Luv.
This is the 16th year of the Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals. The event is produced by the non-profit Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl.
Race sponsors include Wienerschnitzel, Bridgepoint Education, the Port of San Diego, San Diego County Credit Union, the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, San Diego 6-The CW, Jack-FM, 760 KFMB, Navy Dispatch and San Diego CityBeat.
