28th annual event serves as fundraiser for San Diego’s Bowl Games

SAN DIEGO – With perfect weather and intense basketball competition along the shores of Mission Bay, the 28th annual Jack in the Box “Hoops at the Beach” (#HoopsAtTheBeach) was a

resounding success. Players and spectators enjoyed a weekend-long 3-on-3 basketball tournament, as teams played on almost 20 courts set up along Bonita Cove Park. Players of all ages and talent levels competed across seventeen divisions, including elite level competition, men and women, all the way down to third and fourth grade boys and girls. In the top division (Elite), Getting Buckets was a first time champion on Center Court.

The San Diego County Kia Retailers Slam Dunk Contest brought fans to their feet as the winner, Dontae Burnett, threw down several spectacular dunks in winning his second dunk contest title. San Diego Chargers wide receiver Malcom Floyd served as a celebrity judge and joined in the fans’ appreciation of Burnett’s performance.

There was plenty of action on the contest courts as well. James Pauley defended his title in the adult division of the San Diego Chargers 3-Point Shootout, and Anthony Tapia took home the prize as winner of the UTC Aerospace Systems Free Throw Challenge. Junior competitor Senan Matsumoto swept the competition, winning both the 3-Point and Free Throw contests.

There was a healthy military presence in the tournament, as Wells Fargo graciously underwrote the entry fees for 30 active-duty military teams.

This event serves as a fundraiser for the nonprofit San Diego Bowl Game Association, a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to generate tourism, exposure, economic benefit and civic pride for San Diego and its citizens by producing the nation’s most exciting college football bowl game and festival of events.

Jack in the Box has served as title sponsor of “Hoops at the Beach” since its inception. Other event sponsors include the San Diego Chargers, San Diego County Kia Retailers, Wells Fargo, UTC Aerospace Systems, Dr Pepper, Z90.3, Magic 92.5, NBC San Diego, San Diego City Beat, Navy Dispatch and San Diego Family Magazine.
