2011_dptenaward_news.jpgThe Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl announced the winner of the 2011 Dr Pepper TEN Most Inspirational Player Award.

Throughout the season, CIF – San Diego Section football coaches and fans were encouraged to nominate the most inspirational high school football players in the county.

Luis Venegas from Sweetwater High School is the season’s most inspirational player. Despite his father being deported when Luis was 11 and having a mother who is disabled and cannot work, Luis kept up hope and faith that his future would be brighter. He is the second youngest of four children, and the first one with the drive to succeed.

Luis is defined by his determination and has always dreamed of going to college. Luis has found education to be his gateway to success, “I have the obligation to prove it is possible to succeed – for me, for my family and for all the people who have invested their time in me,” says Luis. Luis has been recognized with many academic honors including a spot on the 1st team All-League on defense.

Although many nominations were submitted with extremely inspirational stories from around the county, Luis was the clear front-runner to become this year’s Dr Pepper TEN Most Inspirational Player. He will be recognized on the field during the Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl, Wednesday, December 28th at Snapdragon by Qualcomm Stadium. The 34th annual bowl game features the Cal Golden Bears and Texas Longhorns. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. PST.

This is the third year the bowl game has presented the Most-Inspirational program.

“We are proud to continue sponsoring this meaningful award,” said Mike Utke, Dr Pepper Division Manager. “It’s rewarding for us to partner with the bowl game and recognize student-athletes who contribute in ways that don’t necessarily show up in the stat book. Luis is a most deserving recipient.”

The Dr Pepper TEN Most Inspirational Player is supported by XTRA Sports 1360, CIF, the Kiwanis Club of San Diego and the Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl.
