Award recipients will be honored on-field during the Holiday Bowl

TIJUANA – The Holiday Bowl honored two Mexican high school students who have excelled in American football at a press conference today in Tijuana.  Officials from the Holiday Bowl and Organizacion Estudantil de Futbol Americano (OEFA) presented the defensive MVP award to Carlos Topete and the offensive MVP award to Humberto Lopez Cuevas at the Pueblo Amigo Hotel.

The award recipients will be recognized on the field during the Holiday Bowl on December 30th.  The 38th annual bowl game kicks off at 7:30 p.m. at Qualcomm Stadium and features a match-up between USC and Wisconsin.  The game will be broadcast in Spanish on ESPN Deportes 620 AM.

Carlos Topete

Defensive MVP

Senior, defensive end

School: Instituto Mexico

Carlos Topete has been an exemplary player for the Instituto Mexico football program, despite playing only three years. Carlos was named team captain in 2015 for his leadership on and off the field. Furthermore, Carlos was selected to represent the state of Baja California as part of the 2015 OEFA varsity team. Carlos recorded 48 tackles and eight sacks during the 2015 season.

Humberto Lopez Cuevas

Offensive MVP

Senior, running back

School: CETYS campus Mexicali

Humberto Lopez Cuevas earned the starting running back position on the CETYS campus Mexicali varsity team as a freshman. The team went on to win the state championship three consecutive times. Cuevas was selected as part of OEFA’s all-state team, which shut out its opponent in the state championship, 28-0. He leads his team in total yards and touchdowns and his team went undefeated for the 2015 season. Cuevas finished the year with ten touchdowns and 817 yards over eight games.
