2014_hughmip_300SAN DIEGO – Hugh Anthony, a junior on the Mar Vista High School Football Team, was honored this year as the 2014 Dr Pepper Most Inspirational Player among San Diego county student-athletes. Anthony, who plays on both offense and defense, was recognized and presented with a $2,000 scholarship on the field at the National University Holiday Bowl on December 27, 2014.

The Dr Pepper Most Inspirational Player program aims to recognize a San Diego County high school football player “who, through their presence, actions and words of encouragement, serves as an inspirational example to their teammates.”

Anthony, a starter as both an offensive and defensive lineman, helped lead the Mariners to a 6-4 overall record and a 1-2 mark in Metro League play. He was a starter as a sophomore as well, on senior-dominated team that year.

In addition to his athletic endeavors, Anthony carries a 3.0 grade point average.

According to his football coach, as impressive as Anthony’s accolades were on the field and in the classroom, it was his contagious positive influence on his team, despite hardships at home, that earned him the nomination and ultimately, the Dr Pepper Most Inspirational Award. Anthony helped care for younger siblings, still making a lengthy journey to school each day, while his family endured financial struggles.

“Despite all of the hardships, he did not miss a beat,” said Mar Vista Football Coach Tyler Arciaga. “Hugh has not only taught us a lesson in football (not getting down when things don’t go well) but also the importance of showing resolve so that others around continue to feel your positive energy.”

The Dr Pepper Most Inspirational Player is supported by KyXy 96.5 and the Kiwanis Club of San Diego.
