Rating is highest outside of College Football Playoff access bowls
SAN DIEGO – The 2014 National University Holiday Bowl, featuring the University of Southern California and Nebraska in a game that was not secure until the final play, earned a 4.0 HH US television rating for its ESPN telecast, the highest mark among bowl games outside the College Football Playoff’s six access bowls. It was the seventh-highest rated among 39 bowl games.
An impressive 6.8 million viewers tuned into the 37th annual National University Holiday Bowl that saw the 24th-ranked USC Trojans defeat the No. 25 Nebraska Cornhuskers, 45-42, in front of 55,789 fans at Qualcomm Stadium December 27th. The Trojans led by as many as 18 points midway thru the third quarter and were up by 11 entering the final period.
The 4.0 rating is the highest since the 2005 game (4.1 HH US rtg) and is nearly double the rating from the 2013 game with Texas Tech and Arizona State.
“We were excited about this matchup for the National University Holiday Bowl when teams were announced,” said Vincent Mudd, the 2014 San Diego Bowl Game Association president. “And then USC and Nebraska knocked it out of the park. You always hope for a game like that, where it goes down to the wire. We’ve had tremendous positive feedback about this year and our new matchup between the Pac-12 and Big Ten, and to see a rating like this is phenomenal.”
The 2014 San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl earned a 1.6 HH US rating for its game that saw Navy defeat San Diego State, 17-16, in front of 33,077 fans. Approximately 2.5 million viewers watched the 10th annual game on December 23. Together with the National University Holiday Bowl, San Diego’s two bowl games attracted 25.7 million viewers during the two ESPN broadcasts.
