Holiday Bowl Festivities get started Downtown with 80s Music Festival

Snapdragon Bowl Bash and Concert to benefit Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego

Four iconic music acts of the 1980s will be on stage at Gallagher Square inside Petco Park as part of the Bowl Week festivities for the annual San Diego County Credit Union Holiday Bowl. Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. joins as the title sponsor of the Snapdragon Bowl Bash and Concert on Dec. 27 which will benefit Rady Children’s Hospital. The Snapdragon Bowl Bash and Concert features Flock of Seagulls (“I Ran”, “Space Age Love Song”, “Wishing”), The English Beat (“Save It For Later”, “Mirror in the Bathroom”, “I Confess”), Missing Persons (“Walking in LA”, “Mental Hopscotch”, “Destination Unknown”), and Taylor Dayne (“Tell It To My Heart”, “Love Will Lead You Back”, “I’ll Always Love You”). The marching bands for the schools playing in the SDCCU Holiday Bowl are expected to perform too. Fans are encouraged to dress in their best 80s attire. Those who are voted to have represented the 1980s best will get to participate in the bowl game parade which takes place the next morning. The concert begins at approximately 5:30 p.m.

Tickets for the Snapdragon Bowl Bash and Concert are $40 and $55. From each ticket sold, $5 will be donated to Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego. The check will be presented to hospital representatives on the field during the Dec. 28 bowl game.

Before the concert, the Gaslamp Quarter will come alive with the heart-pounding sounds of the Battle of the Bands featuring the marching bands from the participating SDCCU Holiday Bowl schools from the Pac-12 and ACC. The band show begins at 5 p.m. at the corner of 5th Avenue and Market Street. The event is free. After the “Battle”, live music will fill the air on two stages and there will be plenty of other entertainment for young and old alike to enjoy.

“We encourage San Diegans to join the Snapdragon Bowl Bash and Concert downtown the eve of the game,” said Bob Bolinger, president of the 2021 SDCCU Holiday Bowl effort. “All can enjoy the incredible university marching bands, have dinner, check out all the other entertainment, then take in the 80s concert in Petco Park. It’s going to be a fantastic night and an important one for Rady Children’s Hospital!”
