Over 160 teams took part in bocce tournament Saturday
SAN DIEGO – Early Saturday morning, participants of the third annual Goldfield Stage Bocce Bash walked down the tunnel on to the field inside Qualcomm Stadium and got the day rolling. The event, now in its third year, drew a 21 and up crowd of over 350 people to The Q. Over 160 bocce teams filled over 30 courts spread across the stadium field. Bocce players of all different skill levels competed against each other in a round-robin style tournament, battling for the top spot.
Teams of two showed their creativity by dressing in coordinating uniforms and registering under unique team names. A live DJ set the soundtrack for the day and got the crowd moving. All bocce players received two free beers provided by Coronado Brewing Company and a goody bag filled with swag.
Teams that advanced out of the round-robin portion of the tournament moved on to the single elimination round. In the spirit of the San Diego County Credit Union Holiday Bowl, many representatives from local Pac-12 and Big Ten alumni groups came out to battle their college rivals on bocce courts dedicated to an alumni challenge.
The championship round concluded when team “Sach of Sheet” knocked off the Wisconsin alum club team “I Blame Shore Club,” claiming the coveted 2017 Goldfield Stage Bocce Bash engraved bocce ball sets.
